wie denkt dat Pink Floyd met The Dark Side Of The Moon en Wish You Were Here wel het hoogtepunt heeft bereikt, rekent buiten de explosie van creativiteit die Roger Waters eind jaren zeventig aanwendt bij de totstandkoming van zijn magnum opus in drievoud – album, concert en film – The Wall.

In AANGENAAM VERDOOFD – BEDEVAART NAAR THE WALL beschrijven Charles Beterams en Wouter Bessels de complexe ontstaansgeschiedenis van het album en de film en de overweldigende impact die de – niet meer dan 31 – concerten op de bezoekers hebben. Pink Floyd laat zich niet langer in ons land zien. De devote Nederlandse aanhang moet zijn uiterste best doen om aan de schaarse toegangskaarten te komen voor concerten in Londen en Dortmund. Ze worden daarbij zonder het te hebben kunnen voorzien onderdeel van een historische reis, een bedevaart naar The Wall in 1980 en 1981. Bij terugkomst zijn er de verhalen, concertverslagen in de kranten, en – heimelijk gemaakte – foto’s.

Die geschiedenis is nu voor het eerst vastgelegd in een 120 pagina’s tellend en rijkelijk geïllustreerd boek. De auteurs spraken met concertgangers en andere betrokkenen en hebben daarnaast veel uniek en niet eerder gepubliceerd beeldmateriaal boven water gekregen.

In de jaren die volgen, blijft Roger Waters – ook na het verschijnen van de film in 1982 – onlosmakelijk verbonden met het album. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat er in 1990 in Berlijn een reprise volgt na een turbulent decennium waarin alles in de schaduw lijkt de staan van The Wall. Het boek besluit met een uitgebreide beschrijving van de bijzonderheden van de 31 concerten en een discografie.

AANGENAAM VERDOOFD – BEDEVAART NAAR THE WALL verschijnt als een luxe ingebonden uitgave met harde kaft. 120 pagina's op 170 grams papier, formaat 22 x 22 cm. Gelimiteerde, genummerde en eenmalige Regular Edition van 600 stuks.

100 exemplaren daarvan zijn beschikbaar als Signature Edition in een luxe magneetdoos met foliedruk, met daarin een gesigneerd exemplaar van het boek en exclusief een bedrukte zijde-achtige retro sjaal zoals die destijds ook bij de concerten werd verkocht (deze versie).

COMFORTABLY NUMB – PILGRIMAGE TO THE WALL

Exactly 45 years ago today, Pink Floyd performed The Wall for the last time, in London. The end of an era and at the same time the beginning of a turbulent decade. A beautiful day to introduce a new book, we thought.

Because those who think that Pink Floyd reached its peak with The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, are overlooking the explosion of creativity that Roger Waters unleashed in the late seventies during the creation of his magnum opus in three parts – album, concert, and film – The Wall.

In the Dutch language book AANGENAAM VERDOOFD – BEDEVAART NAAR THE WALL (which translates to COMFORTABLY NUMB – PILGRIMAGE TO THE WALL), Charles Beterams and Wouter Bessels describe the complex origin story of the album and the film and the overwhelming impact that the – no more than 31 – concerts have on the visitors. Pink Floyd no longer appears in our country. The devoted Dutch followers must do their utmost to get their hands on the scarce tickets for concerts in London and Dortmund. They become, without having foreseen it, part of a historical journey, a pilgrimage to The Wall in 1980 and 1981. Upon their return, there are the stories, concert reports in the newspapers, and – secretly taken – photos.

That history is now captured for the first time in a 120-page richly illustrated book. The authors spoke with concertgoers and other involved parties and uncovered a lot of unique and previously unpublished footage.

In the years that follow, Roger Waters remains inextricably linked to the album, even after the film's release in 1982. It is therefore not surprising that a reprise follows in Berlin in 1990 after a turbulent decade in which everything seems to be overshadowed by The Wall. The book concludes with a detailed description of the particulars of the 31 concerts and a discography.

AANGENAAM VERDOOFD – BEDEVAART NAAR THE WALL is released as a luxury hardcover edition. 120 pages on 170-gram paper, size 22 x 22 cm. Limited, numbered, and one-time Regular Edition of 600 copies. 

100 copies of that are available as a Signature Edition in a luxury magnetic box with foil printing, containing a signed copy of the book and exclusively a printed silk-like retro scarf as was also sold at the concerts back then (this version).
