FLOYDSTUFF.COM POLL 2006
2006 turned out to be an exciting year with releases, tours and events, but also the sad demise of the Syd Barrett, who's influence on his fellow band members has never vanished. Our 3rd poll shows the diversity of things happening in the year and we welcomed hundreds and hundreds of entries. Thanks very much for your thoughts, and all the extra comments.
The game for favourite release of the year was on between a new solo album (David Gilmour's On An Island) and a highly anticipated reissue on DVD (Pink Floyd's Pulse). On An Island won with over 50% of the votes. Not to everyone's delight, as both releases can also be found in the top ten of disappointments of the year. A honourable third place in the the release top list is for Vernon Fitch's Comfortably Numb book. David Gilmour dominates this list with no less than five entries.
The event of the year proved to be a very, very close call between concerts of Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Most Russian voters voted for Rog's visit to Moscow but also criticized the bad organisation of the Russian gig. Their wishes for 2007 included a Gilmour gig in many poll entries. Other often named Roger Waters gigs included the ones in Hyde Park (being a UK one-off) and the Arrow Rock Festival performance, which clearly won over the other dutch show in Rotterdam. David Gilmour had remarkably less concert visitors to attract votes from, but a very high rated series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall (most notably the 3rd one with Nick Mason) resulted in a win over Roger Waters.
The prizeless "Best Pink Floyd Fan Site 2006 Award" goes to Brain Damage, just as it was last year. Having to keep up with the overload of news in 2006, Matt did an amazing job and even managed to revamp the site. Well done, Matt, and keep us updated with all the news! The same thumbs up go to the other sites mentioned in our poll, from all over the world.
The list of disappointments is yet again dominated by the absence of a reunion tour or album. Set aside disappointment over things that didn't happen, and focussing on things that did happen, it's the death of Syd Barrett that struck many people. The small Gilmour tour meant that not as many of you could get a ticket for one of his concerts. Complaints not in the top ten also included the high ticket prices. Roger Waters didn't always hit the right note during his concerts and many entries here included comments on the quality (or absence!) of his voice, the dull setlist and the musicians he worked with. We didn't receive any complaints about David Gilmour's concerts, but the On An Island album raised some eyebrows now and then, as said.
Wishes for 2007 are roughly a carbon copy of last year's entries minus Pulse, with a reunion firmly on top. Pink Floyd fans also look forward hearing new albums by Roger Waters and Rick Wright, and, to a lesser extend, David Gilmour. Other things still in the pipeline, such as the Super Audio CDs for Wish You Were Here and Animals, are still not forgotten, so let's hope these to arrive over the next twelve months.
